Potocki Spirits
Potocki Wódka (Rye Polish Vodka)
Potocki Wódka is a superpremium Polish rye vodka built on aristocratic heritage and a deliberately characterful production style a “true spirit” made to be served ice cold and sipped, not neutralised.
Brand heritage (the short version)
- Łańcut distillery founded (officially) in 1784 in Galicia, where surplus grain was profitably turned into alcohol.
- 1816: Alfred Potocki inherited the distillery and developed it to pursue quality.
- Over the 19th century, the distillery expanded and modernised (including early adoption of alternative inputs and improved water sourcing).
- 1911: A modern facility became operational near the railway for easier shipment.
- 1920s–1930s: The business diversified; flavoured vodkas were developed and won a gold medal at the Paris Fair of 1928.
- WWII: The distillery continued operating during occupation, then was destroyed in 1944.
- The Potocki distilling legacy endured through history, and Potocki Wódka revived the family tradition starting in 2003.
How it’s made (what bartenders care about)
Potocki positions itself as a rye vodka with character — not an industrially stripped neutral spirit.
- Rye-based distillate: Potocki Wódka is distilled from rye sourced from surrounding fields (in its current production region).
- Only the “heart” cut is retained.
- No additives.
- Charcoal filtration is intentionally omitted to avoid stripping flavour.
Serve suggestion (brand-led)
Best enjoyed pure, served chilled — a vodka designed to be appreciated for its rye notes.
A note on “Jan Potocki” (the name behind the legend)
The Potocki name also carries cultural weight through Count Jan Potocki (1761–1815) a celebrated figure of the Enlightenment era.
- Polish nobleman; traveller, ethnologist, linguist, and author.
- Known chiefly for his novel The Manuscript Found in Saragossa.
- Educated in Switzerland; travelled widely across Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia and North Africa.
- A pioneer of modern travel writing, documenting customs, conflicts, and social change.
Why this matters for the bottle: Potocki isn’t just a family name it’s a symbol of Polish aristocratic history, curiosity, and craft. That’s the kind of heritage that makes a backbar feel intentional.
Signature cocktail: The Vesper Martini (with Potocki)
A Vesper is a statement drink: crisp, bracing, and built for spirits that can stand up in a very clean format.
Potocki Vesper (Barmania spec)
Ingredients
- 45 mL Potocki Rye Polish Vodka
- 15 mL London Dry Gin
- 7.5 mL dry vermouth (or Belmuse rose if you prefer a softer, aromatised profile)
Method
- Add all ingredients to a mixing glass.
- Fill with ice and stir until very cold.
- Strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish
- Lemon peel (express oils over the surface, then discard or drop in)
Why it works with Potocki
- The rye character gives the Vesper a firmer backbone and a slightly more structured finish than ultra neutral vodkas.
